Materials

Wood
There are three main categories of natural wood decking: pressure-treated lumber, tropical hardwoods, and redwood and cedar.

1. Pressure-treated lumber
Pressure-treated lumber has been the most popular decking material for decades. In fact, approximately 75% of all decks built each year are covered with pressure-treated lumber decking, and most structural elements of decks are made of pressure-treated lumber. Pressure-treated lumber is also the least expensive choice for decking material. The downside of pressure-treated lumber is that it requires frequent maintenance, including new stain every two or three years and annual power washing. It also has a tendency to swell, splinter, and warp, and is very heavy when wet, which can be a structural burden.


2. Tropical hardwoods
Tropical hardwoods are a more up-and-coming decking material. It is the most expensive natural material for decking and is also the densest, heaviest, most weather-resistant, most durable, and most rot- and insect-resistant material. Tropical hardwood also requires minimal maintenance, especially compared to pressure-treated lumber. There are many species of tropical hardwoods that can be used for decking, including jatoba, abaco, and tigerwood.

3. Redwood and cedar
Finally, redwood and cedar, two naturally beautiful crimson kinds of wood. These two types of wood make great decking material because they are naturally insect- and rot-resistant, and are also very lightweight. However, in order to maintain the beautiful color of redwood and cedar, they require a semi transparent stain every three to four years, as well as annual power washing. In terms of cost, redwood and cedar are less expensive than tropical hardwoods but can be up to three to five times as expensive as pressure-treated lumber.

Composite
Composite decking is made out of a combination of recycled plastic and wood fibers. Composite decking is weather-resistant and will not splinter, split, warp, or rot in the same way that traditional wood can. In addition, composite decking requires very little maintenance. While wood needs to be sealed and refinished, composite decking only requires an occasional scrub to keep it clean. Composite decks are also more mold- and mildew-resistant than traditional wooden decks and the rare mildew or mold that grows on composite material can be killed by diluted bleach. The downside to composite decking is that it comes in a limited color range, and will likely fade over time in direct sunlight.
